DOT:
At the moment we are working with Dot and her family and these are her diaries so far. Dot (in the blue harness) is a young puppy farm dog that has recently been adopted by an amazing family. She is very nervous of new people and is not lead trained. She is under the vets and specialists but will unfortunately soon lose both of her eyes due to cataracts and severe glaucoma.
WEEK 1:
One to One, session 1 with Dot ? This week I met Dot and her new family who are all lovely ? She has been with her new family for a week and they have done so well with her eye treatments, settling her in and supporting her through so much change ? We fine tuned her eye drop application routine to make this easier for everyone and as Dot will eventually lose both her eyes due to the severity of the glaucoma my plan is to also work with her new sisters, Rita and Prim and teach them the skills they need to eventually be support/therapy dogs for Dot and be her eyes. Dot now has the most amazing, committed, loving family to take her forward and so much support from them all, dog sisters and people and I have no doubt that we can get them to where they need to be ? I look forward to working with them all in the coming week.
WEEK 2:
One to one, session 2 with Dot. Dot and her family have made big steps since last week, working on her eye drop application, touch work and labelling all actions with verbal commands for when she is fully affected by her glaucoma. The girls started some double leader work yesterday, with Prim helping Dot to find her way for when she looses her sight fully. Dot also did some focus work and soon got the hang of it with her mum and now has recall ? Great session today as we move Dot forward at her pace with her sisters Rita and Prim becoming her support system in time to help her find her way in the world.
WEEK 3:
One to one, session 3 with Dot and her girl crew ? Rita and Prim are her new sisters and we are helping them to become her support system to help her find her way in the world. Dot and her family have been working really hard on helping her to be a "pet dog" and adjust to having a family generally as well as taking care of her medical needs. In session 3 we did a little more work on recall and some on and off lead work and for now we will leave lead work whilst Dot practices this in her own time with her mum and sisters. Next week we are off to a local dog field to take our lessons outside of the home and expand Dot's world a little more.
WEEK 4:
One to one, session 4 with Dot ?In this session Dot, Rita and Prim took all of the things they have learned from the past few weeks sessions, out to a playing field and we practised their recall ? Dot's family now have a word for everything they do with Dot such as touch, pick up etc so she has labels for everything. The girls (including their mum) have worked amazingly together and to see Dot running around as if she had sight was truly lovely yesterday ? The bond Dot and her mum have is proof that dedication and time spent together makes for a trusting, working relationship. It's been a pleasure working with you girls and we hope to see you again later in the year.
